The Secret to Perfect Wedge Accuracy: A Short Game Masterclass
Oli Tucker
PGA Golf Coach
Here's a stat that should change how you practise: the average club golfer spends 65% of their shots from 100 yards and in, but less than 20% of their practice time on short game. If you want to drop shots fast, your wedges are where it happens.
Why Most Golfers Struggle with Wedges
The biggest wedge mistake I see isn't technical -it's strategic. Most amateurs try to hit every wedge shot the same way, with a full swing. But wedge play is about controlling distance through length of swing, not effort. When you try to 'take a bit off' a full sand wedge, you lose consistency. Instead, you should have three or four stock distances with each wedge, controlled by backswing length.
The Clock System for Distance Control
I teach a clock system that gives you predictable distances. Take your swing back to 9 o'clock (hip height), 10:30 (three-quarter), and full. Each position produces a different carry distance. With a 56-degree wedge, for example, you might carry 40 yards at 9 o'clock, 60 yards at 10:30, and 80 yards at full. Write these numbers down. They're your stock yardages, and they'll save you more shots than any driver fitting ever will.
Practising Short Game Properly
At Sandown in Esher, we have a fantastic outdoor short game area where I run focused coaching sessions on exactly this. The key to productive short game practice is variability -don't hit 30 balls from the same spot. Instead, change your target, lie, and club every 3-5 shots. This builds adaptability, which is what you need on the course. I also use games and challenges to make practice competitive and measurable.
The Bounce Is Your Friend
One more thing most amateurs get wrong: they try to 'help' the ball into the air by scooping. This is especially true from tight lies. The secret is to trust the bounce of the club. The bounce is the angle on the sole of the wedge designed to prevent digging. When you let the club do its job -keeping your weight forward and your hands ahead -the ball pops up beautifully with consistent spin and trajectory.
